ASKING FOR A RAISE AS A WOMAN?

Asking for a Raise as a Woman?

Remember the Golden Rule - Men Can’t Read Your Mind. As we recommend with men in a relationship or in a marriage, let them know gently, in exacting detail, what you want—for your anniversary, your birthday, and for Christmas. Believe it or not, most men will appreciate receiving direction and will enjoy receiving the credit when the gift is admired by your friends.

The same applies in a job setting. Your superiors cannot read your mind. Be firm but gentle in communicating your expectations with respect to a raise and bonus. Be prepared to support your request with your experience, your contributions, and comparable data in the market. Be positive with respect to your role within the company, including your hard work and accomplishments, your role in expanding the business and financial bottom line, and your dedication and loyalty. Seek support from superior colleagues if needed. Setting your expectations well in advance of decision time will establish a benchmark for negotiation with respect to how you are perceived and what others may think of your contributions. Having your bosses guess will not likely get close to the amount you are requesting for a raise and will fuel continued frustration. If you have already missed this opportunity, start planning for this coming year!
